A workshop on anger management was conducted at G.D Goenka World School on 21st September, Saturday morning, which was attended by both boarders and house parents alike. Ms. Deepika Tikoo was the host of this commendable event. Discussions took place on various topics related to anger; from distinction between good and bad anger, to what are the factors that trigger anger more frequently in teenagers than in any other person. Not only was the audience able to relate and connect intimately with Ms. Tikoo’s several anecdotes and advices, but was also participating enthusiastically through listening, contemplating and reflecting deeply upon several issues. The show was a time of true self reflection for many teenagers, who admitted that sometimes they too, went overboard when it came to fights and irritation over trivial matters.

Ms. Tikoo explained the reason behind violent mood swings in teenagers and why teenagers sometimes behave the way they shouldn’t. Teenagers get easily overwhelmed by emotion. This stimulus indicates growth and changes taking place in the behavior patterns, psyche and personality of teenagers. She explained the super fast, quick development processes taking place in teen brains, which constantly create new neurons and neuron links, while pruning the older ones. She also discussed in great detail about the difference in the frontal brain of both adults and teens, where adults think more logically and teens take decisions based on the emotional aspect of the frontal region. And finally, she discussed the consequences of actions driven by bad anger, like isolation from friends and family and building up of more frustration. Also, we got to see a few video clips on universal teen anger and steps to manage anger, which made the whole concept of this event even more illustrative and explanatory. We were also taught some few exercises on relieving stress and staying cool during provocative situations. Ma’am went on to explain the miseries of a short tempered teen and how one can channelize their short temper for a good cause instead of thrashing up people and causing destruction not only to others, but also to oneself. The audience also got to learn about the important implications of a few essential words like ego, knowledge, confidence, jealousy and most importantly success; striving to achieve one’s dreams and success is the key to distract oneself from rage and staying happy!
