Fractured fairy tales are a great way to help students see how story elements—like character, plot, setting—shape the stories we write. Keeping this in mind, ‘Writing Fractured Fairy Tales’ activity was held from 13th to 18th April for the students of Grade 6.
Whether it’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ or ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, the zesty and zippy students were guided to turn well-known fairy tales upside down and inside out—and to have fun. Pupils were given a choice of numerous tales to select from; they were then steered to choose a variety of changes, which they could incorporate to compose a fractured fairy tale.
Each group of students came up with ‘their interesting versions’ of renowned archaic fairy tales. Familiar settings of dark woods and grand palaces were replaced by modern era setting, the hackneyed idea of wicked step mother was nixed and replaced by ‘Voldemort’ from Harry Potter series…. the list is ceaseless and exhausting. This activity kindled the students to use ‘out of the box’ imagination and they look forward to more fun-filled learning activities in future.
