You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear. -Sherlock Holmes
In these parallel statements, Sherlock Holmes’ prominent words to Dr Watson implies that “seeing” and “hearing” are passive, while “doing, observing and listening” are active. As a part of interdisciplinary approach of active learning, students of grade 8 combined History & English curricula to create something new by crossing boundaries and thinking across them: reference point being the prescribed texts in the curriculum. The students researched relentlessly on the topics – ‘Nazca Lines’ and ‘The Return of Bamiyan Buddhas’, often approaching the subject teachers with pruning and culling of vast information collected from Google. With great aplomb and eloquence, the students gave a presentation on well-researched topics which left the audience satiated as they acquired knowledge about the obscure realm of ancient History. Students eagerly look forward to more fun-filled classroom activities that would whip up their passion for seeking knowledge.
