English Week ( 23rd August -26th August 2011)

The much awaited English Week commenced on 23rd August with an Assembly put up for the Middle School by the ESL students supported by the students of Grade XII. It was a great idea to have an interactive session to learn Homonyms. The students in the audience enjoyed themselves and participated wholeheartedly in the interactive session. This was followed by a song “Let it Be” by the Beetles which made the audience sway to the lilting music and the brilliant singing of Sagar Choudhary.

There is always a place for humor in our lives and this was amply proved by the Middle School students when they organized “Ad Mad Inter House Competition on the 24th of August. The maxim “There is a pleasure in being mad which none but madmen know” was demonstrated by the competitors who chose their own products to advertise. Sorbus House surpassed in their creativity and ingenuity when a girl dressed up as a boy became a remote control! This novel concept, coupled with hilarious comedy, sent the audience into peals of laughter.

The Orthoepy Inter House Competition was a great learning experience for everyone present. The importance of correct pronunciation can never be exaggerated and this was a Day when the students had to go through an acid test to prove their linguistic powers as some of the words put to them were quite terse. The spelling round made the students put on their thinking caps and it was really a day to test out the innate skills of the contestants! Cedrus House beat the other Houses and it was followed by Sorbus House.

Poetry is the breath of Literature and what better occasion than the English week to meander into it. Another Assembly was conducted on the 25th of August to present the idea of Haikus and Limericks. It was an eye opener for those students of the IGCSE Program who were not familiar with these forms of poetry. A very effective presentation was followed by a quiz for the audience.

The grand finale was scheduled for the 26th of August and it was an Assembly which was not only lofty in its concept but also in execution. The theme of the Assembly was “Light from Literary Lamps’ and the sublime philosophy of life was enacted through different genres of Literature. A scene from the play “The Bishop’s Candlesticks” very poignantly brought out the merit of forgiveness. The rendition of “Nutting’ by William Wordsworth was a classical example of the therapeutic healing power of Nature. This was followed by the histrionic enactment of passages from Lance Armstrong’s “ It’s Not About the Bike by the students of the IB DP. The message of all three was didactic and motivating and very well received by the IB DP students.

The English Week was a great success and the thundering applause and cheering of all the audiences was a reward in itself for the entire English Department .
