CS1 students learn about International Day (27th January) of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust
On January 27 each year, the United Nations (UN) remembers the Holocaust that affected many people of Jewish origin during World War II. This day is called the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It also commemorates when the Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland on January 27, 1945.
What did CS1 students do this week in the library?
January 24th-27th, during library lesson time, all CS1 students watched news about Holocaust on ‘The Day’ newspaper. The senior Librarian presented a motivating talk and a short movie ‘The Boots’ based on Holocaust survivor’s real life story. Students worked on vocabulary related to World War II and Holocaust. Students were sensitized about their role and responsibility as global citizens of the future. They also reviewed Non-Fiction books available in the library. There are a number of age appropriate war fiction titles including ‘Boy in stripped pajamas’ and ‘The diary of Anne Frank’. A brochure has been created for ready reference. All students are thinking ‘What is peace to me’ and writing in the ‘Peace Book’ created for this purpose. It is hoped that learning outcomes of this activity will have long time impact on students.
