World Book and Copyright Day is a yearly event on 23 April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. This year 23 April being Sunday, April 19-21 were celebrated to mark the World Book and Copyright Day at G.D.Goenka World School, Sohna.The programme was inaugurated by the Academic – Director ,Mr. Satinder Kumar and the Principal , Mrs. Neeta Bali. The connection between 23 April and Books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on this day.
Catalonia in Spain sees a largest yearly sale of books on this day and over 4 million roses are exchanged for books. This day is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, and the birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir Nabokov, Manuel Mejia Vallejo and Halldor Laxness.
There was much aplomb and enthusiasm in the well chalked out program put up as a team work by the PYP, Middle and Senior School Librarians. The school corridors, classrooms and junior performing Arts room beamed and echoed with young PYP students cheering tones of characters from stories they liked and enjoyed a story telling in puppet show while importance of reading was displayed in the event ‘Read to your Pet’ in the PYP. Students thronged the special thematic Book Fair and had great presentation and Quiz time assembly conducted by the Senior School Librarian, Mrs. Madhu Bhargava and the Middle School Coordinator, Ms. Monica Bahl. Middle School and IGCSE students participated in a creative writing activity to produce ‘Goenkan Anthology of Short Stories and Poems’ and also designed a ‘Book Cover’ each.
